Dorling Kindersley – Go Surf

scubazooBlog

Following the successful production of Go Scuba Dive Scubazoo’s production team were again contracted by leading reference publisher Dorling Kindersley to produce Go Surf an inspirational and aspirational book with accompanying DVD designed to take you from zero to hero on a surfboard.

The shoot

Late September 2006 saw Scubazoo cameraman Roger Munns and team travel from their base in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysian Borneo to the island kingdom of the Maldives. DK and Scubazoo had chosen Four Seasons Resort Kuda Huraa as their base for the production. It was made an easy choice by the Four Seasons strategic location a short boat ride from several different styles of surf break such as Chickens, Ninja’s, Tombstones, Honkeys and Sultans. Also Surf travel company Tropicsurf had one of their best surf instructors Chris Prewitt based in the resort.
Australian author Tim Baker, DK staff Lee Griffith, Stephanie Farrow and Katie Eke, plus Cameron Craig from Pearson Australia completed the line up for the Maldives surf shoot.

Scubazoo cameramen covered all angles when filming the surfing including inwater filming and shooting long lens from the sticks. With the aid of helmet cams, HD camera housings strapped to longboards, and a great deal of repetitive work from the hard working models, the crew managed to film the entire range of subjects, from pre-surf fitness to cutbacks, floaters, cross-stepping and hanging ten. A successful corporate video shoot despite some tricky weather conditions.

Post Production

On returning to Kota Kinabalu, the real work began. Roger, assisted by Scubazoo editors KB Lai and Jonni Isaacs, managed the entire production of the DVD, an incredibly complicated task given the nature of the project. DVD authoring and motion graphics were handled by Jonni Isaacs while Roger put together the offline edit and KB handled colour correction of the finished timelines. Two masters were produced for the European and American markets.
